Join Peter Ross to discover English medieval shrines.

Saints’ shrines were once one of the glories of English medieval decorative arts. Many were destroyed in the sixteenth century, but a few survived almost intact, including the stunning shrine of St Edward the Confessor at Westminster. Other shrines have been reconstructed from pieces once thought lost but rediscovered in often extraordinary circumstances. This lecture looks at a number of particularly splendid shrines including that of the Confessor, the Saxon King and Martyr St Edmund, St Thomas Becket and St Alban. All were once extraordinary examples of the very finest work of the medieval artists who created them from stone, tile, gold, silver, jewels and fabric. Some, like that of Becket at Canterbury, were of international importance and a place of pilgrimage from across Europe.

About the speaker:
Peter Ross has a History of Art degree, an MA in London History, a PhD in the cultural history of an English criminal, and qualifications in the teaching of adults. Former Principal Librarian at Guildhall Library and an accredited Arts Society lecturer, he has for 20 years lectured on a broad range of topics including the history of English books, portraiture, and London history. Peter has appeared on TV and radio as a consultant on the 18th century criminal Jack Sheppard and on the history of English food. His most recent publication, The Curious Cookbook, was published by the British Library.
