Event Description

London is home to a vast array of buildings, from 3.7m residential housing units to cultural, historic and commercial properties. This building stock is among the oldest in the world, and as a result, often fails to meet our needs, for example in public health or environmental demands.

The tragic death of Awaab Ishak put a spotlight on problems around condensation, which affect 450,000 homes in England. The UK’s built environment is responsible for 25% of its greenhouse gas emissions. These problems are in urgent need of addressing – we know there are architectural, technical, social and policy solutions.

Building, maintaining and demolishing buildings is responsible for more emissions than aviation and shipping combined. Any strategy to improve the quality of London’s building stock must therefore take a retrofit-first approach.

• Rachel Blake (Chair), Prospective Parliamentary Candidate: Cities of London & Westminster

• Estelle Dehon KC, Barrister at Cornerstone Barristers

• Wil Hurst, Managing Editor at the Architects’ Journal

• Tania Jennings, Net Zero Carbon Manager at Lewisham Council

• Smith Mordak, Chief Executive of UK Green Building Council

• Andrew Waugh, Founding Director of Waugh Thistleton Architects

• plus special guests
