ITEMS FOR SALE OR RECYCLE

235 discussions

Over the last few weeks there has been an increase in thefts from unattended cars in the City, including several near Golden Lane Estate. This has taken place in both car parks and where the vehicles have been parked on the street. Some of the items stolen had been left on view within the vehicle.

Along with proactive policing activity (both uniform and plain clothed operations) to deter theft and catch thieves, there are some things you can do to reduce the chances of your car being broken into. (bear in mind the cost of getting your broken window fixed is often more costly than the items stolen).
If you can, take your belongings with you rather than leaving them in the car. If you can’t, lock everything out of sight in the boot.

You should never leave the following anywhere in your car:
– Removable radio fronts (don’t leave them in the glove box)
– Portable satellite navigation systems and their mounting cradle
– Mobile phones
– MP3 players
– Handbags (under seats)
– Laptop computers and briefcases
– Cheque, credit and debit cards
– Items of clothing
– Driving documents and personal correspondence

Always try and remove these items if you can. That old coat on the back seat may be worthless but thieves won’t know that. They may break in to see if you’ve left any money or cards in one of the pockets.

It's also worth permanently marking items with your postcode.
Consider leaving your glove box open to show that it is empty.

For emergencies or where a crime is being committed please dial 999. Alternatively please contact the City of London Police switchboard to report any other concerns on (020) 7601 2222.
