Save Bernard Morgan House

City of London

Can anyone confirm if Crescent House had underfloor heating in the apartments?
Thank you, Jade!

Yes it did. It was supplied from a central boiler room and was disconnected in a retrograde step by the City of London 10 or more years ago, who claimed the system was failing and irrepairable (maybe it was, but not according to my neighbour who has lived here from the beginning & don't forget it still functions properly in the Barbican, presumably using the same system as Crescent House).

It was replaced by individual boilers which had to be positioned in an inelegant location at the front of the flats in order to flue, requiring ugly surface-mount pipes and boxing, additional surface-mount wiring, radiators, and the loss of the storage cupboard in the hall due to the hot water storage and cold water top-up tanks.

I know of one tenant who recently installed electric under-floor heating in CH, but it's a hellish job, requiring the removal and subsequent replacement of the concrete screed I believe.

Just think how much more pleasant under-floor heating would have been, how much better the flats would look without the current system and radiators, and what you could do with an extra cupboard!
We've installed under floor heating.
It's a water system that is laid on top of the concrete floor and runs off the boiler.

Yes there was underfloor heating originally, controlled from a central boiler under GAH. When the flats were given individual boilers the underfloor heating wasn't utilised, instead they ran surface pipes to radiators for expediency I guess.
