We had someone house-sitting our flat for a while, and now the washing machine smells strongly of mould! It is inside the machine somehow. I have tried doing empty hot washes but the smell persists. Is this something that can be fixed? Thanks...

Try cleaning the filter and maybe do a boil wash with some distilled white vinegar in, as it sounds like excess crud and that slime from detergent is sat in the pipes and by the pump.
