3 obstacles to career progression

by Claudia Crawley of Winning Pathways Coaching

29.1.15 @ Barbican Library

Audience participation- Name? 1 achievement in last year?  1 thing wanted from this seminar?

We are not alone in this;  success = overcoming the inevitable blocks;  do you have a dream?

CC acted out NOT getting her dream promotion; rejection; deciding not to pursue any other promotions; years later was offered and accepted a promotion; a few more years and reorganisation with line manager gone; further promotion; redundancy- but now with self belief so set up this coaching business 5 years ago.  Problem was her internal voice- solution was to silence her internal voice.

Career progression; rarely straight up, often sideways, sometimes down; often move to another organisation; men generally more able to climb.

Why progress?  job satisfaction; motivation; improved performance- self and company; salary.

More than 3 obstacles but….

1.

Lack of career plan- 33% of men; 50% of women.

lack of direction

lack of time scale

lack of clarity which leads to frustration.

Solution- Clear about where now and where you want to go + set goals with timescale; create road map/ action plan.

2.

lack of confidence (men are better at faking it)

lack of self belief

lack of self promotion

lack of networking

Solution- improve self belief by process of recording (daily?) achievements (to date?); brag about achievements; fake it until you make it; put yourself forward for challenging tasks; network and find out what others want then send them relevant links- give as well as take;

3.

lack of support from line manager

lack of support from mentor/ coach

lack of support from professional development

Solution- share aspirations; get a mentor/ coach; identify and take advantage of personal development opportunities- see these as an investment; avoid naysayers- people unable to change to accommodate a changed you;

Think about key obstacle.

Think how to overcome that.

Aim- control own life (otherwise someone else will)
