Many thanks to everyone who signed the Golden Lane Estate Petition. It was handed over to the Housing Management and Almshouses sub-Committee yesterday afternoon, 27 April 2015.

The petition was a response to recent events, including the collapse of the tiles to the side elevation of Stanley Cohen House and a fire in Crescent House. There appears to be a growing swell of concern amongst residents about the Golden Lane Estate’s serious state of disrepair and the Corporation of London’s apparent neglect of our Estate.

A group of interested residents carried out the petition between the evening of Friday 24 April and the morning of Monday 27 April. Residents were asked to sign the following statement:

We, the undersigned residents of the Golden Lane Estate, are concerned about the continuing neglect of our Estate by the Corporation of London, resulting in its serious state of disrepair and so posing a significant threat to residents’ health and safety.

All blocks were visited, although due to time constraints, only four floors were visited in Great Arthur House. 

We spoke to 200 households. Of these, 189 signed the petition, representing 94.5% of the sample and 36.1% of the total number of households on the estate (554).

There is clearly a consensus on the Golden Lane Estate: residents are deeply concerned about the Estate’s disrepair and equally concerned about the Corporation’s of London’s apparent neglect.

We will continue to survey residents to ensure all households are contacted and have an opportunity to sign the petition.

We hope this petition will encourage the Corporation of London into action.
