My mother has experienced this on 2 occasions recently.  Luckily, she did not fall for it, but it is still distressing none the less.  She was very upset. After all, when you answer your phone to be met by someone claiming to be the Police, your first instinct is to think something has happened to a loved one.  What I don't understand is how these scams get telephone numbers, and how they know they are of elderly people.  This is a terrible invasion on one's life.  

She did tell me that the person claiming to be the Police did not act like a 'normal' officer, in that they spoke to her in a somewhat 'excitable' tone, telling her they had caught someone trying to defraud her.  Normally, the Police use a very official tone of voice.
