I recently signed up to the new dental surgery underneath Crescent House. Excellent service with polite and helpful staff. Highly recommended and most importantly they take NHS patients (such as myself).

My husband recently had a good experience with them too after he knocked out half his front tooth - they saw him same day (even though he wasn't a patient of theirs). So good, in fact, that we're going to switch from our previous dentist to them...
I was about to post here to warn people from going there. I went for a visit recently and was horrified by the 3 minute teeth cleaning and a repair gone awry. I had to run to another dentist to fix what was done. That anyone can clean teeth in three minutes is just dishonest and misleads the patient to believing this is proper teeth cleaning. The real purpose of teeth cleaning in adults is to treat near and under the gum. This was not done at all. I come from a family of dental surgeons so I cannot agree to recommend this service.
Of course I did. And I had to go back twice--the second time I just went to a private dentist. I am also lodging a complaint with the NHS. It is really unprofessional to not properly clean teeth since the principle idea behind teeth cleaning is to clean under the gum line. This means of course that patients are leaving these offices believing they have had proper clinical measures when nothing could be further from the truth, leaving these people open to other health problems (ie. periodontal disease is linked to heart disease). I don't doubt that people had site specific treatments that they liked, but the doctor who treated me did not even have the equipment to do a proper teeth cleaning. I happily found another dental clinic.
I find dentists maddening. I have no idea how to tell if they're doing a good job or not.
Nick, private teeth cleaning is well worth the money and there are affordable hygienists in the city. Sure, we need to advocate that the NHS work on preventative dental hygiene that will pay professionals for good work with the most up to date technology, but in the meantime taking care of one's health is crucial.
You claim a dental hygiene bill will give you a heart attack--well, what is more likely to occur--well before heart disease--are receding gum lines and plaque and tartar build up due to a lack of proper annual professional cleaning. That will lead to the loss of teeth and decay that will likely exceed the ability of fillings to fix these issues since you won't have any teeth left. So the costs of root canals or periodontal surgery to restore lost tissue and bone will make a hygiene bill look like a walk in the park.
Dental hygienists are not a recent invention by the way. This is a profession that can offer a service at a fraction of what a DDS or DPD can offer. I went to Smilepod and got great service. It really comes down to if you want to have your teeth when you are older and I am more than happy to pay for keeping my teeth. I love eating too much! :-)
