Is anyone driven potty by an alarm going off at all hours of the night and evening?
This has been going on for months and iI thought it was a very loud car alarm, approximately 2 weeks ago when it went off again I went and investigated in the basement of Hrescent House, and discovered its the intruder alarm just above the reception entrance of the leisure centre.

I agree Nathan.
I also thought it was a car alarm, and not happy to hear that something from the new Leisure Centre is causing this racket!!!

Apologies all,
There was a faulty alarm connector that has now been rectified by the alarm company.
James
Well, if it has been rectified, what is that awful racket keeping us all awake then right now???
The alarm malfunction has obviously not been rectified as we were kept awake again in the early hours of this morning by its awful screeching! It is obviously much too sensitive if it is activated by every gust of wind or ant crawling past! What I would like to know is how permission was granted for this type of alarm to be installed in the middle of a residential housing estate - surely a silent alarm that was automatically diverted to the authorities would be preferable. If there is ever a real break-in, no-one is going to take the slightest bit of notice of the alarm as it has "cried wolf" far too often.
I have been reporting it to the environmental health noise pollution team for the last few weeks since i found out it is the leisure centres intruder alarm, this has been going on since the centre opened, and I had thought it was a car alarm, but i actually went down and witnessed the alarm sounding. I report it to the out of hours environmental health who are actually trained up members of the street cleansing team, who are more than willing to help, and log calls, report to the environmental health and come out and witness and investigate, and inform me of my rights and give me useful info. They told me as far as they could gather, after they contacted the city of london police the alarm is un-monitored, there is no registered key holder. I have dealt with the proper 9 till 5 environmental health in the past who were next to useless and was met by complete indifference, who did not even log my complaint when i left a message on one of their staff members answer service, who later denied that anyone in the team had such a service, took them three days to answer my message when they are supposed to make contact within 24 hours, by which time the builders who were going at it hammer and tongs for three days till midnight had left.
The staff on the reception of the centre told me over two weeks ago as far as they were concerned there was no problem or issue with the alarm.
I have been given various explanations by the centers manager, telling me everything had been repaired i.e.. a faulty sensor, He also said he had updated the reporting procedure.
I had a very interesting conversation with one of the site managers from Quinns the builders who did the refurbishment, as I was curious if the roof was leaking and setting off a sensor, as i am aware of the roof leaking above the gym, as I have lived here since 1998, and have witnessed the city of london on a bi-annual basis spending thousands upon thousands paying a company i think was called Bodge it and Run to repair the roof, I remember this because of the insufferable noise. Quinns site manager told me the city refused their advice to have the roof repaired during the refurbishment, by a specialized company after they witnessed and identified the years of water damage to the building and he said the logic of the city behind the decision to do the bare minimum during the refurb to repair the roof was that they wanted the residents of golden lane estate to pay for the full refurb of the the roof above the gym. It is no wonder the roof is knackered as I have witnessed motorbikes mopeds and police squad cars been driven over the paved roof, they were able to gain access because the concrete bollards that were demolished by a bin lorry at Basterfield house were left un-repaired by the city for a number of years.
He also told me as far as he could remember the Intruder alarm is un monitored and does not alert anyone, and is merely a deterrent.
I was told by the 9 till 5 environmental health to keep reporting the alarm every time it goes off, running up a lovely bill for bt, so like it or lump it the alarm is going to remain in situ for the fore seeable future, so maybe the leisure centre will buy us some ear defenders or even ear plugs, or if some one would like to see if they could render a temporary repair of the alarm
I was also told by the environmental health that i was the only person to report it, lol
Nathan - what is the number you are using to report the noise nuisance? Perhaps if we all start to call them every time there is an occurrence we will be able to get somewhere. Has anyone put anything in writing to the Manager of the Leisure Centre?
Count me in too!!!!
I have written many e mails to the manager and cc'ed it to any one i think may be able to help, as far as I know an e-mail is as good as a written letter legally, and is undeniable, which telephone and verbal conversations are, as I have learnt at my cost in dealing with the city of london in the past.
noise pollution aka the street cleansing , who are very helpful, out of hours number is ext 2236, when dialling the main switchboard 0207 606 3030 just ask switchboard for noise pollution team. If you ring environmental health during the day, dont expect your complaint to be logged or to get much assistance, I would advise you to e mail them and then there can little misunderstanding or a future denial. cc the e mail to all those listed below and anyone else you think may be able to assist.
jonathan.acott@fusion-lifestyle.com centre manager
steve.blake@cityoflondon.gov.uk assistant manager environmental health
robert.jacks@cityoflondon.gov.uk estate manager
joy.hollister@cityoflondon.gov.uk director of housing and child services
ian.dowsett@cityoflondon.gov.uk estate officer
The area manager for Fusion rang me today and confirmed what I discovered last week, the leisure centre was handed over to Fusion with the roof already leaking into the newly built gym, He also confirmed that the city of London installed an unmonitored intruder alarm, which alerts no one, and is not connected to any monitoring system i.e. police , security company, switchboard , estate office, city of London or anyone else. It is merely a deterrent, how awfully considerate of the person who made this decision given that it is a residential estate,
Hi! Is that not typical of the City of London to do this, totally disregarding the residents. And, how do they think this is meant to be a 'deterrent', when we hear it so often? As Joyce correctly said, it's like 'crying wolf'!! Who is the idiot who decided on this, do you know? I bet he does not live here, and have to listen to this racket!!!!
