Yesterday, in the early evening, a fellow resident pointed out a really bad potential fire hazard in the basement, at the corners of Crescent and Hatfield House. There were piles of thousands of newspapers that had been dumped, dating 16 years ago. Really concerned I telephoned the out of hours phone number. I went through to someone at Windsor House, but after explaining the situation I was told 'Sorry love, that's not on the list of emergencies'. Apart from not wanting to be addressed in such a casual way, I could hardly see how this could not be classed as an emergency. As we know there have been a few fires lit in the basements on the Estate, and it can be very dangerous. As this person refused to help I contacted the police, who kindly notified the Cleansing Department.
However, they could not get access to the basement, because of the barrier, so the police phoned me asking for the Windsor House Phone number. They agreed that the person on call should have done something about it, as it was not really a police matter, but the Council's responsibility. I was grateful for their help. Eventually, 2 recycling lorries turned up, and it took about 6 men to clear the area. Ian, from the Estate Office was called out to let them through the barrier, and I appreciate that as he was off duty. This incident should be addressed by the City of London, and an explanation given why assistance was refused initially. It is not up to residents to have to chase around getting assistance from elsewhere in an emergency. It appears that we pay a lot of service charges for a now unsatisfactory out of hours service. I trust this will be looked into.

I witnessed the bales of newspapers, among the other household detritus, unbelievable, I should have taken a few photos.
I got the impression it was a case of a house clearance, the hoarder next door, the earliest date on a daily telegraph was 1999, I wonder if anyone in authority was responsible for the clearance and the dumping of the combustible material creating the potential fire hazard?
Hi Nathan. I was told it was from a hoarder's flat, but it was not the resident who dumped all this. Whoever did it I presume was a carer of sorts, so they possibly came from the City. It should never have been allowed for anyone to do this, but the City were clearly responsible to clear it immediately. They failed to do so, and need to provide an explanation as to why it was a resident who had to take action. I hope that, out of courtesy, the Estate Office will issue a statement. Also, this is by far from being the first time we have been failed by out of hours service.
I did take a photo on my mobile.
Its good to know they are up on fire and health and safety regulations, and did an on the spot risk assessment, great to know we are well looked after after the recent electrical fire and the spate of arson attacks in the basement.
Yes, very reassuring! I notice that in the recent Golden Lane Newsletter, and the Wards one, that, whilst the fire in Crescent House was mentioned, and thanks given to those residents who assisted in their co operation, not one sentence about the failure for any resident, including the fire services, to be able to contact anyone on the after hours service, and certainly no apology. And, now, another failing! Is nothing to be learnt?
Well you don't want any negative propaganda, you would need to be a bit foolish to publish the facts, especially when you are writing your own publicity. lol

Oh dear. Mr Lincoln does not look happy. Just like a disgruntled resident!
Old Abe had a lot to say about the city of London, lol
Really! Like what? He was around 150 years ago. What would he say now, I wonder.
Abraham Lincoln and The Greenback (money)
Well, good for Mr Lincoln, but what about us? I would like to think that I would receive an apology over the above shambles, and an explanation as to why a resident had to do the work of someone paid to cover the out of hours service.
