Islington Council is currently consulting on proposals to improve the quality of the streets and spaces along Central Street and part of Golden Lane. The consultation runs until 5 October 2015.

The Council is asking local people and businesses what improvements are needed to make this area a better place for local people.

It is almost ironic that our views on Central Street will be taken into consideration by Islington Council, yet our Council totally ignores our opinions about our Estate.  Every person I have spoken to has expressed their dismay over the deterioration of Golden Lane Estate, and, whilst we are pleased to be consulted over Central Street, I think many people would rather like to hear what improvements are going to be made here first!  

So, can we please be told when Great Arthur House windows are to be done, and when the tiling at Stanley Cohen house will be repaired, and when the concrete at Cullem Welch will be done, and when the repairing and repainting of all the blocks will start, and even when Hatfield House lawn will be put right!  

The other day I saw 2 architects by the Estate, who said to me that the CoL should 'hang their heads in shame' over the way they have allowed our Estate to deteriorate.  

When management of our Estate post discussions, then it would be helpful if they could reply to those discussions.  

So, they have netting on the North side, and now propose to wrap up the South side?  I think you are right Rick.  Did they say why this was to happen?  

Do you know anything about a survey?  And, did they say what their proposals were to rectify any issues?  It just seems to get worse and worse.  I have been trying for weeks to speak to Mike Saunders from the CoL, and have left 3 messages, asking about what they propose to do about the way our Estate has been neglected, but no response.  I think another course of action should be considered to get their attention.  

I guess then they have not given you an alternative place to put them.  Do they mean the ones outside of your main window, and can any of them be temporarily placed by your front door, or have you already got plants there too?  

I don't know what to do about this, my window ledge is full of plants (it's a hobby) including heavy terracotta pots. There's not room to bring them inside or to the front door, not to mention all the spiders and bugs I'd be bringing inside. The ones in the bottom ledge are metal and more weight than one person can lift, so I don't know what they expect me to do with those. They came with the flat (we rent) so I've never had to move them. I'm going to have to speak to the estate office but I'm sure I'll struggle with that too since they are only open when I am working.

I wish the estate office could have given notice earlier in the year before plants had grown large and I'd invested time and effort on them all, but then I get the feeling that would have allowed time for residents to reject have their homes clad in unsightly netting.

Hi FionaJean and Rick.  If it would help, as I am on the Residents' Committee, maybe I could have a word in the Estate Office, and try and see, as Rick suggested, that they let residents know when they are going to do their particular flats, so to avoid anyone having to move their plants for 2 weeks.  FionaJean, it would be a good idea to point out your problem with the pot weight to the Estate Office.  Maybe something could be arranged to assist you.  

I recall, many years ago, when the 3rd floor of Crescent House had to move all their plants so new tiling could be laid.  The COL laid on a nursery where they could all go, but I was allowed by the residents of the top floor of Hatfield House to put them on their roof garden.  Luckily, did not have so many plants then, and glad I did, as the nursery sent back a lot of neglected plants to my neighbours!  

All it needs is a bit of negotiation with the contractors as well.

I know the troughs you mean Rick.  Obviously, in that case, it would be impractical for the Estate Office to suggest you move them.  Surely, the Estate Office should realise that plants directly planted in to those troughs cannot be moved.  You have an upper tier, where you have plants that can be moved, I think.  They should know its easier said than done.
