Help create better mental health services for people living in the City

The Advocacy Project is setting up a user-led service called Mental Health Voice – which enables genuine and constructive involvement from people with mental illnesses in City and Hackney. We are developing a User Leadership Committee (ULC) of ten local people who have experienced mental illness to shape the local services. The User leadership Committee will produce a work plan based on local priorities and will create task groups to put the work plan into action.

The ULC will also design a peer mentoring service. Peer mentoring involves a person with lived experience of mental illness offering one to one support to someone else experiencing mental illness.

Would you like to be involved?
The Advocacy Project are looking for people who are passionate about shaping mental health services that live or work in City of London to join the User Leadership Committee. It is an opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills and hopefully learn something new. We are also looking for people with lived experience of mental illness to train as peer mentors and offer one to one support to someone else experiencing mental illness.

As a long term sufferer of extreme mental health I am delighted about your Project.  I have suffered from severe OCD for over 20 years.  Sadly, mental health illnesses are still not recognised and treated with the same respect that physical illnesses are by some authorities.   That is, for example, it is not accepted by the City of London Housing Department, as I know in my experience, which clearly is against the Equality Act, which is unlawful.  Sadly, they refuse to understand and know how to properly treat people with mental illnesses, and even those with physical illnesses, such as I have experienced from them, as my partner is elderly and suffers from dementia.  Unbelievably, a few months ago, 2 housing officers, one of whom was banned from a Judge from having any contact with me, after months of bullying, and having made a false allegation of assault against me, which was shown to be untrue, wrote a statement, making a 'medical' assessment of my partner, when neither were medically qualified to do so.  They claimed he was in his 70's, when he is 85 years old, and said her was 'able to manage his own affairs', when in fact he suffers from dementia, and is unable to be left on his own.  I think you do need to address the absolute ignorance the City Housing Department shows to their disabled residents, be it physical or mental health.  Please feel free to contact me.
