I feel now that we should all be made aware if the spate if burglaries on golden lane estate recently.

I don't want to alarm people too much but I have lived here a long time and burglary is unheard off.

I was burgled in August they crow barred my door open and there was 2 in Hatfield house last week plus a few others in the last 6 months.

I have been informed that there are now plain clothed police on the estate in the evenings now.

I feel really saddened by this we must all make sure security doors are closed and be more vigilant if one sees suspicious characters .

It seems they are aiming on ground floor flats .we do not have CCTV so it is hard for police to catch them.

p.s. Just read the small print, but how is that enforced/checked upon I wonder?

There is a simple security question and then users are required to give their full name and address, and explain their connection with the estate. In common with most social networking sites there is no way of verifying whether the information supplied is correct. Any information posted on the website is public.

Thanks for that Daniel.

Daniel, by 'public' do you mean anyone can see the posts, or only those who are members of the site?  Also, you say people have to give their full name and address, yet you obviously allow members not to use their real name on the forum if they so wish.

The website including the forum is accessible without logging in. The only exception is private messages. The requirement for using full names to register is relatively new and did not apply to earlier users, although a couple of one word usernames have slipped through since then.

That's disturbing to hear!

Yes, that is disturbing to hear.  I thought it was a private forum, for members only.  And, how could anyone 'slip' through the proper security requirement?  Again, may I ask who exactly has access to this site.  Is it open to the general public as well?  I think it important to know, especially considering a recent post was removed about security issues on this Estate!

Hi Rick.  Unfortunately, I am what some may deem to be a 'computer idiot', as I am not very good with them and am self taught, with obviously a lot more to learn!  That's why I have asked the Admin my question, which I have not yet received an answer to.
So, no, I did not realise everything could be read by the whole world.  Thank you, however, for the info.

One of the reasons I never gave my full name was because anyone can look on here and I am surprised by some of the info people have posted in the past including phone numbers and addresses. I often look on here when I am not logged in and can still read everything, the only advantage of signing in is to add posts & comments and send private messages.

Surely when people first came to this site before signing up, they must have looked around and realised you could read everything?

Hi Maria

Yes the world and his wife can see everything on GLE site, except private messages.  It's not like Facebook where you can, in theory at least, restrict access to your own posts and what your friends post on your page, although FB privacy is an arcane and well nigh impenetrable dark art as far as I'm concerned.  I had a wake up call some time ago when I googled my own name (you should try it).  Whole companies seem to exist simply to gather online data about individuals (including posts on here).  People can even post things online in various fora using your name without your knowledge and it will come up on a search.  It's almost impossible to have stuff removed once its online, it tends to have a life of its own.  Quite scary.  So, apart from here, Facebook and LinkedIn I tend not to use my own full name on social media sites any more (also there's another person with my name on some social media sites, who's a real person, but isn't me!).  Even on those three sites I've been far more circumspect than I used to be.  However, on the other hand one can be too paranoid sometimes. :-)

Hi Maria - Rick and Jean are correct that all of the website apart from your private messages are available for anyone to view online. If you are unsure about what is visible to non-members of the site then log out and browse the website as a guest. If you have any other security questions then you can send me a private message.

Thank you Daniel, and Jean.  At least now I know.  As Jean suggested, I googled my name, and my link to this site came up!  So, 'big brother' etc is watching!  Will, therefore, certainly have to be careful.

I noticed a door not closing properly and saw it was a loose bent screw in the casing in the door jamb, I reported it, expecting a new screw to be put in place but it hasn't been and the hole is empty!! I wonder how much we were charged for that visit that repaired nothing?
